United New York ("we," "us," or "our") provides the United New York mobile app and related websites (the "Service"), a volunteer tool for civic and political organizing. This Privacy Policy explains what we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.
The Service is not a government website and is not affiliated with any election authority. By using the Service, you agree to this Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
Every account requires your name and email address. We also store a password in hashed form. Phone number and address are optional.
Sharing contacts is optional. If you allow it, we receive details from your device, such as name, phone numbers, and address, and match them to the New York voter file for Circle. If you do not share contacts, we do not collect your address book. We do not sell contacts you share.
When you send a message inside the app, we save the recipient and the content of that message. We also save survey and identification answers you submit, and related notes.
If you allow photo access, we receive only the images you select, for example to attach to a support request or to share through a feature you start. We do not access your camera roll in the background.
When you use the Service we automatically receive:
We do not collect precise location. We do not use your data for cross-app tracking or for third-party advertising. We do not sell your personal information.
We use information to:
Sharing contacts is optional. If you do, Circle compares those contacts with the New York voter file. Matched information may include name, address, party enrollment, and voting history where the law allows. Matches can be wrong or incomplete. They are shown to you and to authorized people who operate the Service. They are not sold. If you skip contact sharing, we do not match your address book. Separately, an optional address on your account is used only to open Community and find targeted voters in your community.
We do not sell, rent, or trade personal information. We do not share it with data brokers or advertisers for their own marketing.
We share information with vendors who process it only on our instructions:
Authorized staff and volunteers who administer the Service can access account, messaging, and survey information as needed to run outreach, provide support, and enforce our Terms.
We may disclose information if we believe in good faith that it is required by law, legal process, or a government request, or that it is needed to protect the rights, safety, and security of our users, the public, or United New York.
If we reorganize or transfer the Service, information may transfer with it. We will notify you of a material change in who controls your information.
When a message is sent inside the app, we keep a copy of the recipient and the content. Community texts are sent from numbers we operate. Recipients can opt out by replying STOP or by another method we provide. We keep opt-out records so we do not text that number again for that program. Message and data rates may apply to recipients under their own phone plans. If you send a Circle message from your own phone's messaging app, your carrier delivers it, and we may still save the recipient and the content.
We keep information for as long as your account is active and as needed to provide the Service, comply with law, resolve disputes, and enforce our Terms. Text-message opt-out records may be kept longer so we can honor them.
You can delete your account in the app. You may also email support@unitednewyork.org. After a verified deletion request, we delete or de-identify personal information within a reasonable period, except for records we must keep for security, fraud prevention, legal claims, or opt-outs.
We use administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect information, including encryption in transit, access limits, and hosting on monitored infrastructure.
No method of transmission or storage is completely secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security.
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, or delete personal information, or to appeal a decision on a request. You may also:
Email support@unitednewyork.org to make a request. We may need to verify your identity. We will not discriminate against you for exercising a privacy right. California residents may have additional rights under California law, including the right to know, delete, and correct personal information and to opt out of sale or sharing. We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined by the CCPA.
The Service is offered only to adults 18 and older. It is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have, email support@unitednewyork.org and we will delete it.
We operate the Service from the United States. If you use it from another country, you understand that your information will be processed in the United States, where privacy laws may differ from those where you live.
We may update this Policy. We will post the new version and change the date above. If a change is material, we will provide reasonable notice, such as in the app or by email. Continued use after the update takes effect means you accept the updated Policy.
